FAQs
What are the benefits of hardwood floors over other types of flooring?
There are many benefits to having a hardwood floor over other types of flooring. One main benefit is the increased value that hardwoods bring to a home. According to a survey conducted by the National Wood Floor Association, almost all real estate agents that participated agreed that houses with hardwood floors sold more quickly and at a higher price point. Hardwood floors also have natural and unique characteristics, adding elegance and sophistication to any home.
How long does it take to refinish a hardwood floor? (or how long is the refinishing process for a hardwood floor?)
Every situation is different; however, most refinishing jobs take anywhere from 3 to 4 or 5 days to complete. The length of time is dependent on many different variables, such as the size of the job, the type of hardwood being refinished, if stain is being used, etc.
When can I walk on my newly refinished hardwood floors?
After the final coat of finish is applied, we typically ask that you wait 24 hours before walking on the floors. You will also want to touch the finish and make sure it is not sticky or tacky to the touch. If it’s not, than you can walk on the floors with socks or stocking feet (no shoes or bare feet). Any furniture that does not move or slide can be carefully set back in place after 2-3 days, while mobile pieces (dining room chairs, etc.) and areas rugs should not be placed on the floors for a minimum of 2-3 weeks. The finish is not 100% cured until 3-4 weeks, so while the finish may feel dry to the touch, please be aware that it is still very soft while curing and can be easily dented/scratched during this time. It is important to remember that while the finish may feel dry to the touch, it is not completely cured until about 3 weeks.
What is the difference between a solid wood floor and an engineered wood floor?
As the name implies, solid wood flooring is made of a solid piece of wood that is typically is ¾” thick. One of the main benefits of solid hardwood is that it can be sanded and refinished numerous times. Alternatively, engineered hardwood is constructed of multiple layers with a top layer or “veneer” of hardwood. This hardwood veneer is often referred to as the wear layer. One main benefit of engineered hardwood is that it is more dimensionally stable and can be installed over concrete and in areas such as basements.
What is the difference between a prefinished and a job-finished floor?
A prefinished floor is finished in the factory, so there is no sanding and finishing needed after installation. This shortens the length of time the job takes to complete and also allows for immediate access to the floors since the finish cured in the factory and therefore requires no dry time.
